Who can see the beauty in a discarded stump of wood? I can. I’ve been cutting and carving and drilling and chopping and chainsawing wood for many years. Through curiosity and experience I’ve learned how to expose the inner beauty hiding in those pieces of wood. Many pieces of my artwork come from wood I rescued from fireplaces and landfill. Other pieces of my artwork come from small pieces of wood leftover from projects of furniture and cabinets I used to build. Sculpting wood is a journey of discovery. What will I find within a chunk of wood? Which direction will I cut it? How can I exhibit the movement of the grain? This is what keeps me coming back to my workshop. There is life in the lumber, stump or plank, that I stride to expose to enrich those who view my art.
